ISPRA ”URBAN WASTE REPORT – 2023 EDITION”

ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale) presented on 21st December 2023 the “Rapporto Rifiuti Urbani Edizione 2023” (Urban Waste Report 2023 Edition), containing data for the year 2022 regarding the production and management of urban waste in Italy.

The national production of urban waste – just over 29.1 million tonnes – is not in line with the trend of the main socio-economic indicators: while GDP and household expenditure are increasing (by 3.7% and 6.1% respectively), urban waste is decreasing in all geographical macro-areas.

There is an increase in national separate waste collection, which stands at 65.2% of total production. The recycling percentage of urban waste stands at 49.2%, an increase compared to the previous year (48.1%) but still not enough to reach the 65% target set by European legislation for 2030.

There are 654 municipal waste management plants in operation in 2022. More than the half are dedicated to the treatment of the organic fraction of separate collection (mainly integrated anaerobic/aerobic treatment plants).

The total amount of municipal waste disposed in landfills accounts for 17.8% of the amount of waste produced at national level (in quantitative terms about 5.2 million tonnes, down 7.9% compared to 2021), so this form of disposal still needs to be reduced in order to meet the European targets (10% by 2035).
