ISPRA “SPECIAL WASTE REPORT – 2024 EDITION”
The Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA), in collaboration with the Sistema Nazionale della Protezione dell’Ambiente (SNPA) and the contribution of the Agenzie Regionali e Provinciali per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (ARPE/APPA) published the 2024 edition of the Special Waste Report.
In 2022, industrial, commercial, handicraft, service, waste treatment and environmental remediation activities generated a total of 161.4 million tonnes of special waste, a decrease of 2.1%, equivalent to over 3.4 million tonnes less than the previous year. The construction and demolition (C&D) sector, with almost 80.8 million tonnes, is the sector with the highest total generation of hazardous waste.
Material recovery constitutes the predominant share of special waste management with 72.2% (127.6 million tonnes), while disposal operations account for 14.9%, with landfilling accounting for approximately 8.9 million tonnes of waste (5% of the total managed).
