Fondazione per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile, under the patronage of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), ISPRA and SNPA, presented the report ‘Il Riciclo in Italia 2023’.

Italy is now one of the best performing countries in the European Union in terms of recycling: 72% in 2020, one of the highest figures in the EU (58% on average).

In terms of quantity, it is Germany that sends the most waste to recycling, with 76.6 million tonnes (Mt) in 2020, followed by Italy with 57.6 Mt and France with 41.3 Mt. In terms of per capita values, it is Italy that sends the most waste to recycling operations: 969 kg/inhabitant*year in 2020. It is followed by Germany with 921 kg/inhab*year, Poland with 726, France with 611 and Spain with 453.

In 2022, it is confirmed that the new targets for recycling of packaging waste have already been achieved at national level: CONAI contributes half of the recycling rate. With more than 10.4 Mt collected and sent for recycling out of the total of 14.5 Mt put on the market, equal to 71.5% ( effective recycling rate), in 2022 Italy reaches and outperforms the 2025 target of 65% recycling of post-consumer packaging by more than 7 percentage points and the 2030 target by 1.5 percentage points.
