REGIONE EMILIA-ROMAGNA “WASTE MANAGEMENT REPORT – 2023 EDITION”

The Emilia-Romagna Region and Arpae Emilia-Romagna have drawn up the report “Waste management in Emilia-Romagna – Report 2023”, containing data for the year 2022 concerning the production and management of urban waste in Italy.

As far as urban waste is concerned, while 2022 production is decreasing overall (-1.4% per capita) compared to the 2021 result, separate waste collection is increasing, reaching a percentage of 74%. Landfilling stands at 0.52% of total municipal waste, in line with the plan’s objective of banning unsorted municipal waste from landfill disposal.

As regards special waste, on the other hand, a total of about 14.5 million tonnes was produced (year 2021 data): of this, about 6.2 million tonnes was construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The prevailing form of special waste management remains material recovery, which again in 2021 accounted for 78% of the total managed.

In the Regional Waste and Remediation Plan 2022-2027, particular attention is paid to the indicator represented by the recycling rate, which reached 57% in 2022, compared to a target, set for 2027, of 66%.
