COREVE “GLASS RECYCLING DATA 2023 IN ITALY”
Consorzio Recupero Vetro (CoReVe) has updated its 2023 figures on the recycling of glass packaging in Italy.
Since 2014, the amount of glass recycled in Italy has increased by 26.7%, from 1,615,000 tonnes to over 2 million in 2023. This increase brought the recycling rate from 70% to 77.4% over the same period. However, there was a slight decrease in 2023 compared to the previous year, when the recycling rate reached 80.8%, with over 2.5 million tonnes of material recycled.
One of the main factors influencing the reduction in the recycling rate in 2023 was the increase in the cost of scrap.
In 2023, approximately 1,660,000 tonnes of glass packaging waste were directly managed, and 216 projects were implemented in 579 municipalities, thanks to a total investment of EUR 15 million out of a total of EUR 22 million allocated over two years.
The main challenge for the future will be to further increase the recycling rate by diverting the approximately 250,000 tonnes of glass that are still not recovered from landfills. CoReVe, in cooperation with municipalities and collection operators, aims to increase glass collection by 9% by 2026, reaching 2,619,000 tonnes.
