CONSORZIO ITALIANO COMPOSTATORI “BIOWASTE NUMBERS IN ITALY”

The CIC (Consorzio Italiano Compostatori) Study Center processed and analysed the data of the ISPRA Urban Waste Report 2023 concerning the production and collection of organic waste in Italy.

In 2022, 7.25 million tonnes of organic waste were collected, considering the wet fraction (5.46 million tonnes) and green fraction (1.79 million tonnes), registering a decrease of about 144,000 tonnes compared to 2021.

Considering the total amount of waste with organic matrix (wet fraction, green, civil and agro-industrial sludge and other) treated in Italian plants, an estimated 8.35 million tonnes of waste is instead produced, about 55,000 tonnes more than the previous year: of this, 60% is wet fraction, 20% green, 14% sewage sludge and the remaining 8% agro-industrial waste.

There are 283 (10 less than in 2021) compost-only plants producing compost. There are 74 (11 more than in 2021) plants treating organic matrix waste through anaerobic digestion, mostly integrated with the composting process, for the production of compost and biogas.

From the recycling of organic matrix waste, approximately 1.9 million tonnes of compost was produced in 2022, including mixed composted soil improver (over 1 million tonnes), green composted soil improver and composted soil improver with sludge (over 400 thousand tonnes each). In addition, 409 million cubic metres of biogas were obtained, valorised through the production of approximately 411 GWh of gross electric energy, 169 GWh of gross thermal energy, and 167 million cubic metres of biomethane (in 30 plants).
