ALTHESYS “WAS REPORT 2023”

Althesys Strategic Consultants presented the ‘WAS Report 2023: Waste Management Creates Value for Italy’. The municipal and special waste collection and treatment sector in Italy has a 2022 production value of EUR 18.2 billion (+10.5% on the previous year), and generates EUR 27.2 billion in shared value.

The value chain of the waste management sector includes:

• 9.1 billion euro of direct spill-over effects (added value and tax contribution of companies in the sector)
• 8.45 billion in indirect spillovers (value created by suppliers)
• 9.6 billion in induced spillovers (leverage effect on the industrial system produced by the recovery of MPS and energy)

92% of the revenues involve 104 collection and treatment companies, which served about 4,411 municipalities (56% of Italian municipalities) and 44 million inhabitants (75% of the population).  61% of the operators are publicly owned, 22% mixed and 13% private. The remaining 4% is represented by listed companies including the three large multi-utilities (A2A, Iren, Hera), which account for more than a third of the production volume (more than 870 municipalities and 11 million inhabitants).
