WTERT Network

The MatER Study Center’s  primary interest lies in issues involving waste prevention and recovery of materials and energy from waste.
With the aim of an active role in an international network of research centers carrying out similar activities for sustainable waste management, MatER is also part of the Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (GWC).

The network brings together representatives of the Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT), founded in 2002 by Prof. Nickolas J. Themelis of Columbia University in New York and all its related national organizations, operating in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, Greece, India, Italy, and Mexico.

The GWC’s mission is to identify the best technologies available for waste treatment, conduct specific research on the topic of waste management, and disseminate correct information about it. GWC is committed to the development of sustainable waste management, which includes the entire life cycle of waste, optimizing materials and energy recovery and minimizing environmental impacts, based on scientific knowledge of the effects of individual waste treatment technologies worldwide.
