UNIRIMA “2023 REPORT”

Unirima (National Union of Companies for the Collection, Recovery, Recycling and Trade of Waste and Other Materials) presented the 2023 Report “The Production of Raw Material – End of Waste from Separated Waste Paper and Cardboard Collection”.

Waste paper is a historical sector of the circular economy, which counts more than 700 treatment plants to which separate collections of paper and cardboard waste from municipalities and from commercial, craft, industrial and tertiary activities are delivered to produce an ‘end-of-waste’ raw material in compliance with Ministerial Decree 188/2020.

As far as Italy’s production of waste paper is concerned, it dropped to 6.6 million tonnes in 2022, a decrease of 6% on the previous year.

Paper and cardboard waste, coming both from municipal collection and from production activities, is in fact conferred to 716 treatment plants scattered all over the country: the recycling rate of paper and cardboard packaging achieved by Italy is still well above the European average of 70.5%.
