COREPLA “SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2022”

COREPLA (Consorzio per la raccolta, il riciclo e il REcupero degli imballaggi in PLAstica) has published its Sustainability Report 2022, which illustrates the consortium’s plastic packaging waste management data. The Report shows a 3% increase in the amount of packaging sent for recycling in 2022, compared to 2021, bringing the percentage of plastic packaging recycled to 56.2%, thus already exceeding the European targets set at 50% by 2025 and 55% by 2030.

In 2022, the virgin raw material saved through COREPLA’s recycling is estimated at 523,789 tonnes, the equivalent needed to produce 11 billion 1-litre detergent bottles. In fact, the plastic recycling process requires less energy than that for the production of virgin plastic, with energy savings estimated at 10,946 GWh in 2022, or about 2.5% of Italy’s annual primary energy production. The recovery of more than 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste has avoided the occupation of 35,653,977 m³ of landfill.
