CONAI “FINAL GENERAL REPORT 2022”

CONAI (COnsorzio NAzionale Imballaggi) recently presented the 2022 Final General Report of the ‘General Programme for the Prevention and Management of Packaging and Packaging Waste’.
In 2022, 71.5% of Italy’s packaging waste was recycled. Out of 14.5 million tonnes of packaging released for consumption, 10.4 million tonnes found a second life. Specifically, 418 thousand tonnes of steel, 60 thousand of aluminium, 4 million 311 thousand of paper, 2 million 147 thousand of wood, 1 million 122 thousand of plastic and bioplastic, 2 million 293 thousand of glass.
If we add to the recycling volumes those of energy recovery, the total amount of packaging recovered rises to 11.7 million tonnes, equal to 80.5% of the amount released for consumption.
The result of this commitment has allowed Italy to hit the targets set by Europe: in fact, it has already “exceeded the overall recycling targets that the EU asks of its States by 2025, when each country will have to recycle at least 65% of packaging every year, and by 2030, when the bar will be raised to 70%”.
