Stefano Consonni, MatER/Politecnico di Milano

Prof. Stefano Consonni holds a Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. Since 1990 he has been on the Faculty of the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano, becoming full professor of Energy Systems in 2001. From 1997 to 2005 he has been Head of the campus of Politecnico in Piacenza. Since 2005 he is President of L.E.A.P. (Laboratory for Energy and Environment, Piacenza), where he also directs the study center MatER (Material & Energy from Refuse). His latest activity focuses on carbon capture, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy from waste and biomass. KEYNOTE LECTURE How to measure the quality of materials management and recycling?

Helmut Rechberger was born on February 21 1968 in Linz, Austria. He holds a Master in Process Engineering and a Doctoral degree in Waste Technology, both from Vienna University of Technology. He continued his training as a post-doc at Yale University and as a Senior Scientist at ETH Zurich. In 2003 Rechberger has been appointed full professor for Resource Management at Vienna University of Technology, where he built up the Research Unit of Waste and Resource Management, a group of some 30 researchers and staff members. His research interests are: Material Flow Analysis and resource accounting,  Methodology development for urban mining and resource classification, Further development of evaluation methods and concepts in waste and resource management including statistical entropy, Waste characterization, Handling of data uncertainty, Recovery of valuable substances from ashes and slag. Under his lead the softwares STAN (world-wide used for MFA studies) and BIOMA (efficient greenhouse gas accounting from waste incineration) have been developed. ResearchGate

Since March 2016, Giuseppe Bortone is the General Director of ARPAE – Regional Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy – of Emilia-Romagna. He holds a degree in Biological Science from Università degli Studi di Parma. In 1996-2001 he had an experience as research fellow in ENEA, national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development. He has had a long professional experience in the environmental field in the public sector starting in 2001. Since 2007 to 2016 he has been also head of the Directorate General for Environment, Land Defense and Coast of the regional Emilia Romagna council.

The role of bioplastics in packaging and their impact in the waste management system

David Bolzonella is a professor in Chemical Engineering at the Department of Biotechnology, University of Verona. His main research interests are related to the valorisation of organic waste and wastewater sludge into biobased chemicals and biofuels as well as nutrients recovery. He authored and co-authored more than 120 papers on these topics, cited more than 7,500 times.

Biowaste mass balance analysis and future prospects in Campania region

Alberto Grosso holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Salerno. Since 2005 he has been in charge of the Regional Section of the ARPAC Waste Cadastre.  In 2007 he took care of the drafting of the Waste Report as part of the ARPAC “Environmental Reporting and State of the Environment” project. Since 2008 he has participated in the regional working groups for the preparation of the Special and Urban Waste Management Plan of Campania, and also participates in the regional technical tables for the drafting of Environmental Reports, in the context of SEA procedures (Strategic Environmental Assessment). Since 2013 he has collaborated with several universities for the realization of LCA studies on urban waste management systems in Campania also as co-author of numerous publications. In recent years, in addition to continuing to follow the planning and monitoring of the waste cycle in Campania, he collaborates with the Regional Waste Observatory in the management of the ORSo web platform.

Bioenergy from green waste through anaerobic digestion: substrate, biogas, and digestate characterisation at lab-scale

The main objective of the research activity is the evaluation of the methane potential of selected urban wastes generated at local territory, specifically in the Marche Region (Adriatic Seaside, Italy). The focus of the project is the energetic treatment and valorisation by biological processes of several biomasses (such as the different residual organic fractions present in municipal waste) involved in the local waste management system.

Fabio Tatàno is an engineer who graduated from the University of Palermo (Sicily, IT). He received his Ph.D. in Sanitary-Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Milan (IT). During his Ph.D., he had a long stay on wastewater treatment and sludge management at Ruhrverband (Essen, DE), the German Regional Association responsible for integrated water, wastewater, and sludge management in the Ruhr river basin since 1913. He is currently a researcher and professor in Sanitary-Environmental Engineering at the University of Urbino “Carlo Bo” (Central IT), where his research activity is mainly focused on landfill gas emission monitoring, bioenergy (through anaerobic digestion) from biomass resources and waste, and risk analysis and remediation of contaminated sites. Since May 2012, he has been the chairman of the European Technical & Scientific Committee of the European Water Association (EWA).

Dry anaerobic digestion for biopolymers recovery from organic fraction of municipal solid waste

Elena Rossi is a PhD student at DESTEC – Department of Energy, Systems, Territory, and Construction Engineering, University of Pisa since November 2018. Currently, her research activity deals with anaerobic biorefineries. Indeed, the anaerobic digestion process provides multiple products starting from organics wastes. Among them, Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs) are interesting to produce both biofuels and biopolymers.
In this context, the work, which she is presenting, focuses on the application of a pilot-scale plug-flow reactor for the treatment of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). The study aims at evaluating the application of semi-dry processes to produce VFAs.

Currently, he works as a researcher at the Institute of Polymers, Composites, and Biomaterials of the National Research Council (IPCB-CNR) with the research group of Dr. Mario Malinconico. For more than twenty years, our research group has studied the replacement of traditional polyethylene films used in agriculture with soil degradable geo-membranes applied on the ground.

Since 2006 in ART-ER, currently she is on the staff of the Sustainability Area Manager for Sustainable Innovation. She holds regional representation roles in: SPRING National Technology Cluster; National Coordination Group on Bioeconomy; PPP BBI-JTU; European Expert Group Circular Economy Financing Mode; European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Raw Materials. She is responsible for KIC EIT Raw Materials and EIT Manufacturing and member of the RIS Policy Council of the EIT Food. She coordinates the Regional Working Group on Circular Economy and participates in the Control Room on Plastic FreER. She works as an expert evaluator for the European Commission, the ERA European partnerships, and other institutions. Environmental impact of refrigerant during maintenance and disposal through Montreal Protocol and its amendments in Taiwan

Fei-Chiao Yang is currently studying for a Ph.D. at National Taiwan University and also works in Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) which is a research institute. The major research topic is environmental management and policy, especially for ozone layer protection and climate change. The Montreal Protocol recognized as a successful environmental convention, however, most of the controlled substances used as refrigerants in air Conditioner or refrigeration. The recovering and recycling efforts during maintenance and after disposal of equipment should be an important strategy to save the atmosphere. The research analyzed the result for ODS management in Taiwan and deliver suggestions for the refrigerant management strategy to improve recovering, recycling, and circular economy for refrigerants in Taiwan.

Ngoc Han Hoang works in the field of environmental management. She obtained her master’s degree in Applied Science in Environmental Management at Lincoln University, New Zealand. As a member of the National Institute for Environmental Studies of Japan, she is currently working on a project under the joint JICA-JST programme, SATREPS, aiming to develop environmentally sound Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) management in Vietnam. Her presentation focuses on the financial and economic feasibility of two concrete recycling models in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Rui-An Lin majors in electrical engineering and computer science. After graduation, he joined Delta Electronics for four years, engaged in the construction of energy recovery systems. Since then, he has developed a strong interest in circular economy and green technology and began to study for a doctorate in environmental science. Currently, his research interests focus on autonomous and sustainable cities supported by circular economy and green technology. For further research results, please refer to his personal webpage. In the Meeting, he will share a case study of sustainable infrastructure in a sustainable city. How does a resource regeneration center realize autonomous performance improvement and integrated benefit evaluation?
